History
The Chuvash church in Ulyanovsk was erected in 1884 on the initiative of the famous educator of the Chuvash people living in Simbirsk, I. Yakovlev. It functioned as a home temple at the city Chuvash teacher's school. The construction was carried out with donations from private benefactors, an allowance from the Ministry of Public Education, as well as funds from the Orthodox Missionary Society. Initially, the church building was a 2-storey brick house, built according to the design of the famous architect Lvovich-Kostritsa A. I. In the winter of 1885, the church was consecrated.
In the late 1990s, the church was rediscoveredrebuilt, adding an altar. Funds for the reconstruction were provided by the merchant of the first guild, Nikolai Yakovlevich Shatrov. The year 1898 is called the start date of the Orthodox Holy Spirit Brotherhood organized at the church.
The temple carried out active educational activities aimed at teaching and educating baptized and unbaptized Chuvash, as well as Russian and baptized Tatars aged 11-18, who were admitted to school. By 1918, about one and a half thousand people had been trained by the school staff. In 1918 the temple was closed. Its activities were resumed in the 90s of the 20th century. In November 1991, the church was consecrated again.
Today
Today the Chuvash church is a temple with truly unique features. Divine services are held here in Russian, as well as in the Chuvash language, their national traditions are taken into account. Some of them, without contradicting the charter of the Church, are completely original, having no analogues in Russian churches. For example, the tradition that exists here to remove damage and treat many ailments by the method of “laying down icons”, as well as the tradition of the Christmas torchlight procession, is resistant. Despite all its originality, the temple is a religious institution belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church (the Simbirsk and Melekes dioceses) and carrying the word of God to numerous representatives of the Chuvash people.

About Icon Treatment
Parishioners very colorfully describe the rite of treatment of ailments carried out in the Chuvash church by applying miraculous icons. According to them, it happens like this.
At the end of the service, while the last cries are still being heard, many of those present begin to spread the bedspreads on the floor and lie down on them in pairs, placing their feet towards the altar. The parishioners fit so closely that the heads of those lying literally rest against the soles of those in front. The rite begins. Two women appear, carrying a huge icon of the Healer Panteleimon on a towel. Women slowly move past people lying on the floor and put an icon on each of those present on different parts of the body - on the chest, on the stomach, on the forehead and on the legs. Everything happens very quietly and calmly. One of the women carrying the icon is believed to have psychic powers.
Sometimes (this rarely happens) she stops near one person and with the edge of the icon begins to draw something resembling the figure of a cross on the body of the lying person. In the temple at this time it is so quiet that the crackle of candles is heard. Then monotonous singing begins to sound and everyone praysSaint Panteleimon. It happens that after the icon is placed on the body of one of the parishioners, he starts screaming wildly and writhing in convulsions. According to the authors of the reviews, the cry of a raging one can be of great power - so loud that he could even drown out the howl of a fire siren. The raging one bends and, continuing to lie, bounces on the floor, screams and contorts. Those present, clutching their ears, mouths and noses, crawl away from the screaming away. After the icon is removed, there is dead silence in the hall.
According to experts, the described rite of treatment with icons, carried out in the Chuvash church, is a modified form of another rite known in Orthodoxy. In the old days, the houses of the villages were surrounded by miraculous images. Those who could not touch the icon were reprimanded, or otherwise, demons were cast out.
