The Holy Cross Church in Tyumen is one of the historical sights of the city. Its full name is a temple in honor of the Ex altation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. The article will briefly describe the history of the church, the current state of affairs of the parish, and provide a schedule of services.

A Brief History

The temple was founded in 1774 at the southern tip of the Tyumen Cape, at the confluence of the Tura and Tyumenka rivers. Previously, this place was a wooden church, which was destroyed by fire.

The temple was built at the expense of parishioners and was consecrated in 1791. Initially, it was called Resurrection and was built in the Baroque style. In 1937, a fence with two gates was erected around it. The large octagonal dome with a cross and the cupolas of the quadrangle were covered with gilding. In 1845, the building underwent restoration, as a result of which it somewhat changed its appearance. So, the rich stucco on the facade was lost - Baroque decor. The general impression, however, this was not affected: the temple only began to look more majestic and stricter.

After the restoration, the temple was renamed and became known as the Ex altation of the Cross Church. In the 19th century, it was reconstructed more than once. In 1873, houses for the clergy were erected on church lands.

The parishioners of the Ex altation of the Cross Church in Tyumen (photo above) at the beginning of the 20th century were residents of four surrounding villages. These were the villages of Kazanskaya, Voronina, Meteleva, Knyazheva - a total of 183 yards. Church buildings included a chapel, a planked wooden barn, and a church library containing 376 volumes.

After the revolution

In Soviet times, the fate of the Holy Cross Church in Tyumen, as well as many churches in the country, was unenviable. Services were held there until 1929. The bell tower was dismantled, the head with a cross and four small domes were removed. After the closure of the temple, its building was used for workshops, a shooting range, a DOSAAF school and even a club. Two floors were arranged in it.

The revival of the temple began in 1993, after the transfer of the building to the Tobolsk-Tyumen diocese. Fr. Sergiy (Kistin S. S.), Its repair and restoration lasted five years. Under his leadership, the partitions and the concrete floor were removed by volunteers. The Ex altation of the Cross Church in Tyumen was restored according to surviving photographs. Since 1995, the temple has become attached to the Holy Trinity Monastery. Father Tikhon was appointed rector, who soon received the rank of abbot. In 1997the building of a religious school was erected, which later housed an Orthodox gymnasium.

The bell tower was built in 1998. Divine services were resumed in 1998 after a long break. The restoration of the building was completed on August 26, 1998 with the installation of a large octagonal dome on it. The consecration of the temple was held by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy on August 31. The new building of the religious school, built in 1999, forms a single architectural ensemble with the building.

Description

The architectural composition of the Ex altation of the Cross Church is based on a traditional double-height quadrangle with five domes and a characteristic baroque division of the high dome into segments with arched ribs. The bell tower was erected in the form of a traditional octagon with a sloping roof. The original interior decoration and decoration of the temple were completely lost. The walls of the temple inside are white. It is rectangular in plan. Due to its strict forms, the bell tower remotely resembles a fortress tower.
