Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeev: feedback from colleagues
In early 2002, he arrived in the Sourozh diocese (ROC in Great Britain and Ireland) as a vicar of Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom). Soon, a whole group of priests led by Bishop Vasily (Osborne) took up arms against the actions of Bishop Hilarion.
In May 2002, Illarion was attacked by the critical speech of the ruling bishop Anthony, who gives his assistant three months to delve into the essence of the Sourozh diocese and decide for himself, whether he is ready to continue serving in accordance with the norms and ideals that have already existed for 53 years. Anthony stressed that he admires the merits of the young clergyman, but if they do not agree on the main issues and do not work as a team, then they will have to disperse.
Bishop Hilarion did not take long to answer. He issued a statement denying all allegations against him.
As a result of this confrontation, Hilarion was recalled from this diocese, and in July 2002 he was appointed bishop of Podolsk, vicar of the Moscow diocese and the main representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in international European organizations, where he was actively involved in information activities.
