Historical background

The Resurrection Monastery in Togliatti is one of the few in Russia that has not been restored from the destroyed, but created from scratch. The abode is located in the Port settlement district on the banks of the Zhiguli reservoir (man-made), whose waters cover all the buildings of the city of Stavropol-on-Volga (the old name of Tolyatti). The buildings of the monastery are more than a century old. Previously, the city zemstvo hospital, founded by Evgraf Osipov and built in 1868-1872, was located here. The hospital served its intended purpose until 1953, when, in connection with the construction of the Kuibyshev hydroelectric power station, Stavropol was flooded with the waters of the artificial Zhiguli reservoir. As a result of the flooding, the hospital building was not damaged, being the only surviving object in the submerged city.

For several years, hospital facilities used for various purposes gradually dilapidated, and the surrounding area fell into disrepair. The hospital complex remained in this state until 1995, when it was decided to buildhere is the temple of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption parish leased the premises of the former hospital, after which a house church was equipped in one of the buildings for participants in the construction of the temple. In 1997, the first prayer service is held here, after about a month services begin in the church, and in June it is consecrated in honor of the Holy Resurrection of Christ. In the fall of 1997, the hospital finally becomes the property of the Resurrection community, and in the winter it receives the status of a monastery.

About monastery shrines

The main asset of the monastery is the icon of St. Great Martyr Barbara. During the period when hieromonk Feoktist was a mentor in the monastery, fishermen caught it in the Zhiguli reservoir and brought it to the monastery. According to some assumptions, the icon allegedly surfaced from one of the churches of Stavropol, which had gone under water. However, according to people in the know, this is highly unlikely. It is known that the property of the temples was completely removed back in the distant 1920s. The face of the found icon was so dark that it could hardly be distinguished. The image is currently in the process of gradually updating itself.

Fragments of the holy relics of the Great Martyr Barbara were presented to the monastery as a gift, which are kept together with the image in a carved casket. On Fridays, during the morning service, an akathist is read before the image of the saint. The monastery also keeps a casket containing the relics of saints, as well as icons with the relics of the healer Panteleimon and saints.
