In Christianity, in the sacrament of chrismation, consecrated fragrant oil is specially used to anoint the body - it is called myrrh. In Orthodoxy, it is also used during the consecration of a new church, for anointing the throne, antimension and walls. Earlier in history, according to the Orthodox tradition, they were anointed to the kingdom. In temples, it is stored in a special vessel called the myrrh.

Historical data on the origin of the world

For the first time, the world can be learned from the Bible in the book of Exodus, when the Lord commanded Moses to take fragrant substances consisting of odorous plants, olive oil and make myrrh for the holy anointing.

At that time, only the bishop had the right to prepare myrrh. It was prepared from a mixture of various fragrant substances. This action was considered analogous to the descent of the Holy Spirit on Christ at His Baptism and was consecrated in the altar on the throne.

Basily the Great, along with other church leaders, attributed the consecration of the world to the apostles.

In the Orthodox Church, myrrh is prepared from pure oil and olive oil, where wine is added, which prevents oils from burning, and incense, which may include incense,rose petals, spicy roots, nutmeg, lemon, clove oils and more.

In Orthodox churches, they usually use this type of incense as:

  • oil - oil (mainly olive), which is used during the Sacrament of Unction during anointing;
  • myrrh (myrrh), which is a hardened resin of the bark of a tree from the Burzer family;
  • miro is an aromatic oil composed of fragrant herbs and frankincense, which is the hardened resin of the Boswellia tree.

All three are very revered by the Orthodox.

Church Fragrant Oil

It is worth paying attention to this topic. Surprisingly, almost all fragrances from any church shop have a pleasant and persistent smell, and these fragrances are so harmonious that they not only do not distract from the main, or rather, important thoughts, but also do not violate someone's personal space.

There are fragrances with floral names of such types: "Lily of the Valley", "Linden Blossom", "Gardenia". But there are other names: "Athos", "Byzantium", "Jerusalem". In some names there is a mention of church holidays ("Easter", "Christmas", "Trinity" and so on). And there are fragrances with fantasy names, something like "Paradise Bouquet" or something like that. This fragrant oil is mainly used as body perfume.
