Dorothy Jane Roberts (08.05.29.-05.09.84.) - American writer and poetess, the famous New Age persona. Her publications of the texts of the spiritual essence of Set (known as the "Materials of Set") made her a prominent figure in the world of the paranormal. The Yale University Library Archives hold a collection of items called "The Papers of Jane Roberts" (MS1090). Here is Jane's entire personal and professional life: magazines, poems, drafts, personal correspondence, audio and video recordings, and other materials that her husband and others donated to the organization after her death.
Birth and early years
Jane was born in Albany (Albany, New York), USA. Her father's name was Delmer Hubbell Roberts (Delmer Hubbell Roberts), and her mother was Marie Burdo (Marie Burdo). After the birth of the child, they did not stay with each other for long. When Jane was 2 years old, she and her mother moved to Saratoga Springs (Saratoga Springs), to the house of her grandparents.
BIn 1932, when Jane was 3 years old, her mother developed symptoms of early rheumatoid arthritis, which prevented her from working. Joseph Burdo (Joseph Burdo), Jane's grandfather, could not provide for two more people, and the family was forced to apply for public assistance. In 1936, Jane's grandmother died in a car accident.
In 1937, her grandfather moved away from them and began to live separately. By that time, Maria was partially incapacitated. When Marie became completely bedridden, Jane took care of her. She cooked, cleaned, washed the sheets, got up in the middle of the night to refuel the stove. Her mother was losing her mind and accused Jane of wanting to turn on the gas in the middle of the night and kill them both.
Jane was told from childhood that it was her fault that her mother fell ill. The girl also had he alth problems that no one paid attention to. For example, she had very poor eyesight and had to wear glasses, and she also suffered from thyroid problems and colitis.
Jane's mom tried to kill herself five times. After the fifth suicide attempt, Marie swallowed sleeping pills and ended up in the hospital. She accused her daughter once again of being the one to blame for her illness. The child's patience snapped, and she went to a Catholic orphanage in a nearby town. Here she lived in 1940-1941. Religion strongly influenced Jane Roberts, whose books are now known all over the world. She wanted to find answers to her questions in religion. Until the death of her grandfather in 1949, Jane professed Catholicism. But soon she renounced the faithCatholics, because she realized that she did not need those dogmas and the god that the Christian church worshiped.
Already at the age of 16, Jane Roberts went to work in a shop. From 1947-1950 she took poetry classes at Skidmore College.
Two marriages
At the time, Jane was dating W alt Zeh, a childhood friend from Saratoga Springs. Before marriage, they rode together on the west coast to Jane's father on a motorcycle. After the wedding, Jane continued to write and did other types of work. For example, she was the editor of the Saratoga newspaper and worked as a supervisor at a radio factory. W alt and Jane lived together for three years, but the family fell apart. It became clear that W alt preferred men.
In early 1954 Jane met Robert Fabian Butts. At the time of their meeting, she was still officially married to W alt, but meeting with Robert hastened the divorce process. They got married in December of the same year, just 9 months after they met. Until 1960, they lived in the city of Sayre (Pennsylvania), and then settled in Elmira (New York).
Jane went to work at an art gallery, and in her spare time she wrote poetry and science fiction. Robert worked as an artist, painted pictures. The first and last attempt to have a child ended in a miscarriage. The couple went through this moment very hard and no longer tried to have children. Instead, they took care of their cat and dog.
Jane Roberts: Seth
At the suggestion of her husband and with the approval of the editorJane decided to write a book on esotericism. At that time, none of them imagined what this decision would lead to.
Roberts Jane, whose psychic abilities were revealed thanks to experiments with the Ouya board, got in touch with a developed entity that called itself Seth. Three months after the first contact through the Ouya board, Jane began to transmit voice messages that Robert recorded. Time passed, and her opportunities grew. The material that Seth handed over was enough for as many as six books. The main idea of all messages is that thought creates.
Shakti Gawain wrote about the messages of Seth:
"The Nature of Personal Reality by Jane Roberts has greatly influenced my life and work"
Life after Set's appearance
Sessions, of course, occupied a very important place in Jane's life, but she still continued writing. She still worked in the genre of popular science fiction and fantasy. In 1967-1975. she taught classes in extrasensory perception, where she taught people how to discover their innate abilities and apply them in everyday life. Quite often during classes, unexpected sessions with Seth began. In addition to psychic studies, Jane taught a writing class. He was not so popular, but there were still many who wanted to. Both courses were paid, and the family lived on the income from them. The publication of books brought practically no money, and the family could not live on the profit from them.
Criticism
Because ofJane's unusual work faced a wave of harsh criticism. Many people respected in society called her a liar and mentally deranged. However, there were those who were ready for new views, who accepted the teachings of Set. Thanks to the latter, all of Seth's materials were published, although this took years, and some of them were published after Jane's death.
He alth
Jane inherited a tendency to various diseases and poor he alth from her mother. She began to show symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis early enough. She did not go to the doctors even when she got into a wheelchair. She preferred to treat herself with the methods Seth gave.
However, the work with personal beliefs and attunements was not complete and very successful. Destructive, negative thoughts put her in the clinic in 1982. But even there, Jane continued to hold infrequent sessions with Seth for her husband and for herself. They are collected in the book: "The Way to He alth".
Death
Jane spent a year and a half in the hospital. And she died there on September 5, 1984. By the time of her death, she was completely paralyzed, unable to see or hear. She was cremated the next day and her ashes were placed in Wayne County Cemetery, New York.
Jane's father died in 1971 at age 68.
Jane's mother died six months later, also at 68.
Jane's husband died in 2008 of cancer at age 89.
All his life he worked to get the books of Set out into the world. In 1999, he married hisSecretary Laurel Lee Davis. His ashes are in the same cemetery as Jane's.
