In the north-west of Moscow, in the residential area of Strogino, among beautiful, but standard skyscrapers, the construction of the temple is almost completed. White in color, with lace decor and keeled kokoshniks, the building looks very impressive. The Church in Strogino of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia is being built according to an individual project as part of the "200 Temples" program.
Description of the temple building
When creating it, the architect A. Pronin relied on the architectural traditions and canons of church building adopted in Russia in the era of Ivan the Terrible. Christian churches of that time are unique examples of ancient Russian architecture.
The stone and lace building of the temple in Strogino, entwined with four tiers of kokoshniks, has a height of more than 48 meters, but looks elegant thanks to the tent looking up. There is no church building like this in the capital. Each kokoshnik is individual; narrowing, theirtiers pass into the belfry. Above is a massive drum topped with an onion dome. Three semicircular apses adjoining the main building are covered with a closed semi-vault. The complex brickwork required a lot of effort from the builders, because in order to create such beauty, each brick was undermined and cut by hand.
The Church in Strogino of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia can rightly be called the pearl of temple architecture of our time. The area of the unique building is 722 sq. m. Services in the temple can be attended by 650 people at the same time.
In memory of the Russian New Martyrs
During the 20 centuries of the existence of the Orthodox Russian Church, many thousands of Christians were martyred, but our twentieth century gave the most victims for the faith.
75 years ago, after the revolution, in our country there was a period of persecution of the church and mass repressions against citizens who did not agree to give up their religious beliefs even for the sake of saving their own lives. The victims were Orthodox people - laity, clergy, monks and everyone who remained faithful to the Lord and his church under the conditions of a totalitarian regime. The Russian New Martyrs were subjected to humiliation and insults, endured unjust oppression, becoming like Christ in their torment.
By their self-sacrifice, the saints who lived quite recently proved their love for the truth of God. The church in Strogino of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia is named after these sufferers. Their life path andthe experience of gaining holiness is very important for the current generation of believers. The memory of the New Martyrs is honored by many Christian churches in Russia.
History of the community and temple construction
Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Russia gave his blessing to the creation of the community of the Church of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, after which it was registered and on August 29, 2000 began its activity. The following year, a land plot was obtained on Stroginsky Boulevard, later - a permit for the construction of the temple, limiting its construction to a single building. It took several more years to obtain numerous approvals and develop the project.
In 2004, for the future temple, pilgrims brought shrines from the monastery of Mary Magdalene, on the Mount of Olives. These were icons with the faces of the Martyrs Grand Duchess Elizabeth and the nun Varvara, as well as reliquaries with particles of their holy relics.
In 2008, a small building of sandwich panels was erected - a temporary temple. Three years later, a prosphora was built under him, in which the first artoses were baked for Easter in 2011.
In March 2012, the construction of a new building began with the consecration of the foundation stone, and in April 2015, on Easter, a service was held in the Strogino church for the first time. Since then, divine services have been constantly held in it, although some finishing work and landscaping of the territory will be completed only in the summer of 2017. Presumably, the consecration of the temple will take place in August.
