Ryazan Holy Trinity Monastery is the most ancient monastery in these places. It is located on the western side of the city at the confluence of the small local river Pavlovka with the Trubezh near the Moscow Highway.

Chronicle of the monastery

The time of foundation of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Ryazan is not exactly known, but there is evidence that it appeared at the beginning of the 14th century. The surviving historical archives contain information that in 1386 Sergius of Radonezh stayed at the monastery, which was located in Ryazan.

According to other sources, the monastery was founded by Bishop Arseniy in 1208 as a defensive fortification on the outskirts of the city. In ancient times, the Ryazan principality was subjected to constant raids by the Tatar-Mongols, as a result of which the records related to the history of the monastery were lost. The first concrete written references to the monastery are found only in the 16th century.

The monastery complex took shape during the XVII-XX centuries. The first stone Trinity Church was erected on the site of a small wooden church in 1695. Then in 1752 the Sergievskayachurch.

On the north side, above the central gate, there was a bell tower, consisting of three tiers. There were also rectory and fraternal buildings and a two-story chapel built in 1858, which was called the "Holy Gate".

The main shrine was the Fedorov Icon of the Mother of God, which was donated by the merchant G. Anzimirov. Narratives of miraculous healings from this ancient list have been preserved in the annals of the monastery.

The entire territory of the monastery was surrounded by a brick fence with five towers, inside of which there were outbuildings. Outside, a monastery garden was laid out with an apiary and a vegetable garden.

During the years of communist rule, the history of the Trinity Monastery was sad. After the revolution in 1919, the monastery lost its status. His temples continued to hold services, but already as parish churches, which were closed before the war. In the buildings of the monastery at different times there were workshops, warehouses, a driving school. For some time, the buildings were also used as living quarters.

Temples of the monastery

The first St. Sergius Church was built of wood in 1697. In 1752, at the expense of the nobleman A. Verderevsky, a new stone church was built in its place. This is a pillarless brick quadrangle in the Russian Baroque style. The roof is made in the form of a four-sided tent with a wooden drum and an onion-shaped dome.

In Soviet times, the murals on the walls of the temple were plastered, and the crypt located inside it was opened and freedfrom the coffins with the remains.

The Trinity Cathedral Church was erected in 1695 by the dependent of the stolnik I. Verderevsky on the site of a wooden church of the same name that burned down in a fire. The shrine was built of brick in the Baroque style in the "octagon on a quadrangle" type. Interior decor and original wall paintings have not survived to this day.

During the years of Soviet rule, the building was converted into car workshops. Factory buildings were added, which distorted the appearance of the Holy Trinity Church beyond recognition.

At the same time as the Trinity Church, a bell tower was erected on the territory of the monastery. It was facing the Pavlovka River, had 3 tiers and 8 bells. To this day, the bell tower has not survived in its original form.
