Decades of godlessness have led to the fact that even those Russians who consider themselves Orthodox Christians have little knowledge of Holy Scripture, not to mention the works of outstanding theologians of the past. As a result, they have a lot of questions, the answers to which are extremely difficult to find without special knowledge. Therefore, the word of a wise shepherd, such as Archimandrite Iannuary Ivliev, is of particular importance. His short biography will be presented in today's article.
Childhood
The future Archimandrite Iannuary Ivliev was born in 1943 in Vologda. His family consisted of ordinary Soviet employees. When Dima was 7 years old, his mother died. She, like her husband Yakov Ivliev, was an ardent communist, far enough from the church. The future archimandrite did not receive a Christian upbringing. But later he always noted that it was infamily and school he was instilled with basic moral principles that penetrated into the blood and flesh of Russian culture from Orthodoxy.
In his teenage years, Dmitry was found to have an aptitude for natural sciences and mathematics. Therefore, no one was surprised by his decision to choose the profession of a physicist.
Study and work at the university
In the early 60s, a young man entered the Leningrad University at the Faculty of Physics. In parallel with this, he attended the classical department of the Faculty of Philology, where he listened to lectures by the famous professor O. I. Dovatur. After graduating from a prestigious university in 1966, Dmitry Yakovlevich Ivliev entered graduate school. Until 1975, he worked at Leningrad State University as a researcher and was engaged in research in the field of physics of near-Earth space.
Conversion
While studying in graduate school, the future Archimandrite Iannuary Ivliev, who received an insignificant scholarship, began to look for a part-time job. She shouldn't interfere with his studies. There were few options. Dmitry was glad when he was taken as a night watchman to the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky Cathedral. There the young man first came into contact with church life. He clearly saw its shortcomings: closed in on liturgical practice, strict supervision of the state, the absence of youth and missionary work, etc. However, all this did not repel him. On the contrary, he was delighted and interested in the we alth of Orthodoxy, which was hidden behind visible poverty.
Dmitry began to randomly study Christianliterature, which only caught his eye. The first book he came across was the Acts of the Holy Apostles. After that, he enthusiastically began to read the works of Russian religious philosophers Vladimir Solovyov and Father Pavel Florensky.
Studying theology
In the late 1970s, the future Archimandrite Iannuary Ivliev met Metropolitan Nikodim of Leningrad and Novgorod, who made a great impression on him. He invited the young scientist to become a student of the Leningrad Theological Academy. In October 1979, Dmitry was consecrated Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod as a reader in the Assumption Krestovsky Church.
Later, D. Ya. Ivliev took monastic vows with the name Iannuary. Then he was ordained to the priesthood.
Service
Over the next three decades, Fr. Jannuarius taught Holy Scripture and performed various church obediences. He did a lot of research on issues relevant to modern theology. He strove to convey the Good News to every parishioner and even those people who had never before sought solace in Christianity.
In 1981, Fr. Jannuarius defended his dissertation, receiving the degree of Candidate of Theology. The theme of his work was the patristic interpretation of some passages of Holy Scripture. Since that time, Ivliev became a teacher at the Theological Academy, where to this day he teaches biblical theology and the New Testament.
In 1985 he was awarded the title of Associate Professor. Already a year later. Januarius waselevated to the rank of archimandrite by the Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod. In 2005, he was awarded the title of professor at the St. Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy.
Further activities
In subsequent years, Archimandrite Iannuary Ivliev, conversations with whom helped many people find their way to God, was engaged in active church and social activities. For many years he was a member of the theological and biblical commissions of the Holy Synod, and also supervised the editorial board of the Holy Scriptures of the Orthodox Encyclopedia Center, took part in various international consultations and conferences.
