In this article we will talk about who the guris are in Islam. Most often, this word is associated with some delightfully beautiful girl living in an Islamic paradise, but in fact it is a much deeper concept. Let's try to figure it out.
Origin of the word
The word "guria" is derived from "havir". In Arabic, it means "white eye with deep blue-black pupils and graceful eyebrows."
Guris in Islam
These are beautiful girls who were created by Allah for souls entering Paradise in order to serve them. However, the main occupation of the inhabitants of paradise is to be spouses for men.
Guris are colorfully described in numerous hadiths. According to these authoritative sources for Muslims, the beautiful girls of Paradise are ideal. They have incomparable beauty, meek and quiet disposition. They do not have the faults of earthly women - the houris are not subject to disease, they do not menstruate, they do not defecate, they do not sweat, they do not have a runny nose and never have a headache, so their body is perfect in every way. Also, they cannot get pregnant. Paradise hourisin Islam, they completely obey their husband and never look at other men. In general, they represent the ideal of a woman in the view of Muslims - an ideal that is absolutely unattainable for the earthly representatives of the fair sex (at least for purely physical reasons).
Most often, houris appear in the form of buxom girls with big black eyes, silvery skin. All of them are virgins. In the hadiths, it is repeatedly emphasized that they were not touched by the hand of either a person or a genie, and they are also the same age as their husbands. Gurias in paradise in Islam live among green shady fruit-bearing gardens in luxurious tents, where they recline on richly decorated carpets. In addition, in the Koran, in addition to other numerous descriptions of the houris in Islam, it is said that these girls are like pearls hidden in a shell, rubies and sapphires. The Prophet says that they are like red wine in an elegant white glass: their breasts are rounded, pointed and not inclined to sag, their body is so thin and transparent that you can see the marrow.
It is worth saying that the righteous men themselves correspond to heavenly beauties in their appearance. These people shine like moonlight, they do not defecate or urinate, and they also smell of musk. They will live in luxurious palaces with many colorful rooms, each of which will have many beds made of aloe wood. The domes of these palaces are covered with precious stones: pearls, rubies and aquamarine. Indeed, this temperamental idea of paradise is very different from the similarChristian, in which you will not find such a palace, and even more so a beautiful houri.
So, we have answered the question of who the huris are in Islam. Of course, you won’t be able to see their photos, as well as the canonical images of heavenly beauties: in principle, iconography is not accepted in Islam.
What are houris made of?
Different hadiths give different versions of the answer to this question. So, Imam at-Tabarani claims that houris are made of saffron, and Imam at-Termizi says that heavenly beauties consist of three parts. Their lower body is made of musk, their upper body is made of camphor, their middle part is made of ambergris, and their hair is made of nur.
Whose wives will the houris be?
Such happiness in the afterlife falls to the lot of those men who spent their lives in accordance with the instructions of Allah, were pious, nobly endured all sorts of difficulties and always tried to prevent injustice, evil and vice. It is worth saying that the houris in Islam are far from the only pleasure prepared for Muslim men in paradise. In addition to associating with heavenly girls, they will lie on beautiful beds and enjoy the fruits of heavenly trees.
And what will the women get?
A reasonable question arises: "If the husbands get the heavenly beauties-houris, then what remains for their wives?" Muftis answer this question as follows: righteous wives will follow their husbands to paradise and will dwell there with them. If the woman was not married, then she can either choose one of thethe righteous, or especially for her, Allah will create an ideal companion (apparently, an analogue of the houri).
Wives and husbands
It is worth clarifying that the term "guria" is used mainly in the earlier parts of the holy book. Later, next to the righteous husbands, their spouses begin to appear - in a transfigured form, younger and much purer, as well as again becoming virgins. However, the houris in Islam are still assigned to every righteous man, they become his other numerous wives. In general, for one Muslim who enters paradise, there are about seventy guris (this number differs in different hadiths and sometimes reaches five hundred). However, an earthly wife will still surpass all the inhabitants of paradise, because she, a righteous woman, performed namaz and worshiped Allah during her life on earth. As for men, Allah will provide them with inexhaustible physical strength so that they are enough for all their countless concubines.
Sufi understanding
There is both a literal perception of the image of the houris in Islam, promised to the righteous in very real heaven, and a symbolic interpretation of this image. The latter belongs to the Sufis, the Islamic mystics. They understand the houris as a symbol of mystical pleasures, which is why the difference between heavenly beauties and imperfect earthly women becomes especially important. Of course, mystical love is also the lot of a faithful righteous person who follows the true path.
