St. Nicholas Cathedral in Bobruisk is the oldest Orthodox shrine of the city and the center of its spiritual life. Not only believing parishioners flock here - in the square around the temple, newlyweds take pictures on their wedding day, mothers with strollers stroll along quiet alleys, and both young people and elderly people sit on standing benches.
History
The first wooden church in the name of St. Nicholas was built in Bobruisk in 1600. Initially, it was related to the Uniate Church, but in 1798 it was returned to Orthodoxy and received the status of a cathedral.
In 1812, the construction of the Bobruisk fortress began, and the local population was resettled to the Parichi suburb. The temple was also moved there. In 1829, another resettlement of residents followed, already to the Minsk suburb. There, in 1835, a new wooden St. Nicholas Church was built.
In 1880, the entire population belonged to the Nikolsky parishBobruisk, along with adjacent farms and villages. The total number of parishioners was 4124 people.
Stone temple
In 1892-1894, a new stone cathedral, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, was erected in the city center with state funds and donations from residents. In addition to Bobruisk itself, 11 villages adjacent to the city were assigned to the parish. By the beginning of the 19th century, the number of parishioners was about 7,000 people.
In addition, St. Nicholas Cathedral also owned church land - 2 acres of garden land, 37 acres of arable land and 33 acres of hay. The parables also included a temple on Luka's farm, a church on a local churchyard, and a church on the Berezinsky suburb, for the construction of which the material of the former wooden St. Nicholas Church was used. There were also several Sunday schools, including the cathedral one.
With the coming to power of the Communists St. Nicholas Cathedral in Bobruisk was closed. In 1922, by order of the authorities, all church valuables were confiscated. The temple resumed its activities only in 1941 with the outbreak of the war.
During the occupation, there was a German military hospital near the temple. For the burial of soldiers and officers who died there, a necropolis was organized on the territory of the cathedral. In 2014, the remains of German soldiers were exhumed and buried in another churchyard.
In 1964 St. Nicholas Cathedral in Bobruisk was closed. All religious items were transferred to the Nikolo-Sofia Church. The parish community also moved there. The building of the HolyNikolsky Cathedral was converted into a children's and youth swimming pool.
Revival of the shrine
In 2003, the authorities returned the cathedral building to the Orthodox Church. At the same time, the restoration of St. Nicholas Cathedral (Bobruisk) began. In 2007, the restored and restored temple was re-consecrated.
The six-domed building has two thrones and is made in pseudo-Russian style. The height of the bell tower reaches 32 meters. The walls of the cathedral are plastered. The exterior decoration uses traditional elements of architectural decoration: jagged friezes and arched window openings. The walls of the cathedral were originally pink.
Sunday school, library, treasury work at the temple. Assistance is provided to the disabled and single pensioners.
