The Church of the Savior of the Holy Image in Gireyevo is its historical name. It came from the name of the village in which it was built. Now the church belongs to the Moscow district of Perovo and it is also called the temple in Perovo of the Savior of the Image Not Made by Hands.

Temple History

This temple was built by the princes Golitsyns in their estate in Gireevo. Construction began in 1714. It was then that Prince Golitsyn browed the great sovereign Peter I and asked him for permission to build a stone church in his estate. The Church in Perovo of the Savior Not Made by Hands was built in the Naryshkin baroque style, but more ascetically. This asceticism is connected with the fact that in 1712 St. Petersburg was declared the capital of the Russian Empire, and active construction began there, so stone construction in Moscow was frozen.

However, the prince nevertheless built the temple, and it became the manor temple of the Golitsyn princes. This is also evidenced by the princely bed, in which the princes themselves prayed separately from their serfs. The tombstone also testifies to this, becausehow exactly the children of the princes were buried here. In 1718, the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Perov, whose photo you see, was consecrated by Metropolitan Stefan Yavorsky, and Priest Timofey Avakumov began to hold regular services here. Father Timothy served here for 25 years, and out of respect for this clergyman, the Golitsyn princes allowed him to be buried in the church, which is also evidenced by a memorial plaque.

New life of the temple

At the end of the 18th century, the estate was sold and after that it often changed owners. At this time, the temple in Perovo of the Savior Not Made by Hands fell into disrepair and turned into a simple chapel. The new life of the temple began in 1872, when the estate was acquired by the merchant of the first guild, Torletsky. His son built the village of Novogireevo.

Despite the fact that the village was considered a summer cottage, people lived here permanently, and soon the number of residents of the village approached 15 thousand. There were many believers among them, and they asked the Metropolitan to build a new church. The Metropolitan proposed to revive the existing church. The villagers improved it and resumed services.

Severe years of hard times

At the beginning of the 20th century, hard times began for the church. In 1922, the Church of the Savior of the Holy Image in Gireev (Perov) was "robbed" in accordance with the decree "On the seizure of church valuables", and on April 20, 1941 it was closed. A sniper school "Shot" was set up on the territory of the temple. Iconsserved as targets for snipers. The church was desecrated and destroyed.

The years of hard times passed, and by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Pimen in 1989 the temple was returned to the church. The first liturgy was served here on May 18, 1991, on the day of memory of the Great Martyr Irina. This day remains memorable for parishioners to this day. Every year on May 18, a solemn service and procession is held.

Our time

The Church in Perovo of the Savior of the Holy Image is located next to the city hospital. This neighborhood left its mark on parish activities, and even on the interior of the church. Here is the first in Moscow icon of 12 Healers, where people come to pray for their he alth and the he alth of their loved ones.

Recently, there is an ark with the relics of Russian saints in the temple. The northern and southern wings of the temple are themed. The southern wing is dedicated to Russian saints. It is here that the most valuable icons are located. For example, the icon of St. Nicholas of Myra the Wonderworker was preserved by one parishioner. This icon was kept at her home for 50 years from the moment the church was plundered until it was restored. In the northern wing of the temple there is a wooden carved crucifix. In it is a small old pectoral cross with a particle of the wood of the cross of the Lord. This cross is very small, but very ancient. It is dated the century before last.

Services in the temple are performed daily. Matins and Liturgy are served. Worship starts at 8:30. Sundays and holidays earlyLiturgies are served at 6.30 am, the later ones at 9.00 am on the eve of the All-Night Vigil.
