In modern reality, different situations happen. Attitude towards them depends on upbringing, as well as on stereotypes. Evaluation of an event can vary from negative to positive. A technique used in many areas of life contributes to a change in the perception of things.

Definition

Reframing is a technique that changes the understanding, opinion of a person in order to further give any phenomenon a different meaning. In addition, such unique craftsmanship includes processing opinions about objections or doubts.

This is the psychological purpose of this method. The word comes from the English lexeme frame - "frame". As a result, literally reframing is a change in frames, boundaries.

Origin of the concept

Change in attitude to things is common in different philosophical and psychological directions. The name itself and the algorithm were introduced by neurolinguists J. Grinder and R. Bandler. They suggested that the healing effect of the reframing method is based on a judgment about the attitude of the individual to the situation, event or behavior that occurred.

All the circumstances that occur are multifaceted. They can be described from various points of view. This is seen as a cardinal change of mind, outlook.

Types of reframing

There are several varieties of methods. They are always replenished with new options due to the fact that the old ones sometimes lose their effectiveness. Their use in some territory is fading away. They become irrelevant due to the receipt of new algorithms and approaches.

Reframing the situation (or meaning)

This method is described in two forms: semantic and contextual. Each of them, in turn, has a couple of behaviors: procedural and psychotherapeutic. In the first case, rehabilitation is carried out in stages, each step is recorded. The second implies the same method, but it disguises itself as an ordinary conversation with a psychotherapist.

Semantic reframing is the ability to think positively, given the understanding of a problematic situation. This is necessary for the further effectiveness of the method. For example, V. Satir described the following situation, which shows how to act. The female patient, who was a housewife, was worried about marks on the carpet in the room. She was angry with her loved ones when she saw this slovenliness. The psychotherapist using semanticreframing, suggested that the patient thought only negatively. That is, if traces are present, then she is a bad housewife. Although the patient did not see the other side of the same situation.

The algorithm for carrying out rehabilitation activities was built as follows. After the second appeal for help, the patient was asked to imagine that she was alone. But with one caveat - the apartment is now always clean carpet. Therefore, the effectiveness of reframing is as follows. The patient was offered another, more meaningful meaning for her experiences. In the past, the event that occurred carried only one meaning - negative, now, due to the reprogramming of the patient's thoughts, it turned into a positive status.

The creators of the method say that when a positive result is obtained, the way to obtain it is not logical. It is exclusively individual for each patient. Therefore, reframing can be described as a kind of suggestion of new positive thoughts in response to ongoing events. This can be confirmed by what the authors require in order to achieve an effective result, a kind of trance of the patient. The result can be determined thanks to the frame reaction. It is described as a rapid change in the internal state for the better. In this case, we can talk about the concept of "positive reframing of the situation." If the opposite reaction is observed, the mood and state worsen, then this state is called the opposite term - "negative". It is carried out tothe patient became aware of the consequences of bad behavior, which was confirmed by a change in sensorimotor behavior.

Contextual reframing

This method is based on the assumption that any response or behavior is needed and acceptable in a particular situation. The same case can be interpreted in different ways. It depends on the environment and circumstances surrounding the event. The term "context" is interpreted as a general picture that allows clarifying the meaning of individual actions, reactions. For example, the family went swimming and sunbathing. In this case, the sun is a great source of positivity and makes people happy. But if we consider a summer resident who every day waits for the appearance of precipitation, and instead of them he finds another sunny day, the situation will be the opposite. It is necessary to understand some point, which allows us to understand that actions are behavior. A simple question is appropriate for this: "Under what circumstances would the behavior be most useful?" It is always necessary to analyze the context in which actions are performed.

Six Step Reframing

Also called behavior reshaping. It is used to treat neurotic problems. The process of alteration is based on the assumption of a bifurcation in the patient's thoughts of good and bad bases of nervous behavior. After the part of the brain responsible for a favorable response realizes that everything is fine, it is left to act differently. That is, to apply a new variant of behavior that will be more effective, but without an unpleasant emotionalcomponent.

Efficiency

As for the effectiveness of six-step reframing, here we will talk about creating a special context for a medical consultation. At the initial stage, the patient is introduced to the idea of the positive role of any body systems. There are cases when this psychotherapeutic stage is given much more time than the step-by-step reframing technique itself.

Here we mean the patient's voluntary awareness of a nervous symptom, which can be positive. And this is just the result of treatment. To facilitate understanding and overcome the effect of psychological protection, the assumption is specially introduced that a positive decision is made not by the patient himself, but by his body - the brain.

Thus, if we understand the causes of nervous actions in this way, we can deduce two additional therapeutic results. In the first case, a distance from the benefit of the nervous action, which is recognized by the patient, is possible. In the second - the collision with the symptoms is reduced. This implies a version of the passage of a local nervous conflict. The meaning of what is happening arises due to the search for positive desire in the parts of the body. The second stage is characterized by the reframing procedure.

Reframing and psychology

It is known that understanding another person is not easy, and sometimes impossible. This can affect the effectiveness of communication. Here you need a skill that will open the doors to other perspectives of communication. Reframing in psychologyplays a huge role, because with its help you can learn to understand other people.

So, if you have achieved unity with a person, then it is not necessary to accept his point of view. In this case, there will be only a positive result for the individual. Since communication will become productive, and the goal set initially will be achieved.

Disadvantages of the methodology

Reframing is a schematic and difficult to implement method, which is a minus for its implementation in practice. If we compare the procedures of reframing and other techniques of positive psychotherapy, we can say that they are similar. It should also be noted here that a healing approach similar to reframing was known before Neuro-Linguistic Programming (M. H. Erickson) and others.

Changing our point of view

Let's try to find a way out of a certain situation and apply reframing in everyday life. It is worth noting that any circumstances are never one-sided. You just need to look for a way out and a solution to the problem. An efficient way to prove this is presented below. So, there is a specific flaw that a person has found in himself, it prevents him from living. Write down ten positive characteristics of this shortcoming. Now distribute them in two different columns with a plus and a minus sign. If the results are equal in the columns, write a few more words. The effectiveness of such a technique as reframing has been proven. Exercises that allow you to realize this can help in any, even the most advanced situations. It often happens that after such training a personforgets about the problem and does not return to it.

Each person is unique and has both positive and negative qualities in character. To improve and work on yourself, it is not necessary to change everything. Personality reframing is a technique for transforming the “I-image”, which requires only a sense of humor and creative thinking. It is only necessary to revise the negative perception, changing it to a positive one, or vice versa. As a result, it can be argued that when using this method of changing opinions, the overall picture is not rebuilt. But the frame, which was originally a problem, changes exclusively to the opposite. Due to this, a person perceives himself and the surrounding reality on the contrary, as if his opinion was turned one hundred and eighty degrees.

Summarize. The well-known saying "to look at the situation from different angles" is now called in one word - "reframing". Or, in order to change the picture of past events, you need to rebuild your internal attitude towards them. Recommendations for the use of this psychological method will save the nervous system.
