This article will focus on the Landolt Ring method. You will learn about exactly where this technique can be applied, what it is used for and, in general, how to work with the data that you received after working with this sample. This technique is a modification work of B. Bourdon, which is based on the correction test of E. Landolt, a French ophthalmologist. After these words, you can pay attention to some inaccuracy in the title. But one way or another, the test is still called the Landolt Ring method. Now we should move on to the very description of this technique.

Landolt Ring Method

This test helps to identify the level of attention of the tested person and improve it. If you look at the test sheet for the first time, on which circles with slots are located in dense rows in different places, you can come to a little bewilderment at the thought of what is next with this pattern.the testee has to work. Landolt rings are one of the types of test tasks. This is a very easy and fairly quick way to test attention. In addition, it is not difficult to check the results.

Where the correction test is done

Sometimes in medicine it is required to check the attention of people with any diseases or to obtain some kind of medical clearance. In this case, the most common test method is the Landolt test. But most often it is in schools that Landolt rings are used. For younger students, this test is quite simple and understandable. As well as reading technique, students check the level of attention, and also improve it with the help of the same test. Landolt testing should be done with children over the age of seven or eight. For younger ones, this test may seem too complicated and simply will not give the desired result.

Progress with the test

A leaflet with Landolt rings is placed in front of the test person. After the purpose of his work is explained to him, it will be necessary to time the start of testing. Sometimes schoolchildren or test-takers are not limited in time for testing, but most often this is done only in the process of training. In the same paragraph, the course of checking attention will be described. Stage of work, the next after training with the Landolt test.

The test subject's goal is to find a ring whose slot is in a certain place, for example, twelve (top)or fifteen (right) hours. In the process of searching for the required ring, it is important not to help yourself with your fingers or a pen, with which the test subject will have to mark (best of all, cross out) the rings he has found. Usually fifteen minutes are given for work. And every five minutes, the test subject should be given the “line” command, after which he will have to put a vertical line in the place where he was at the time of the command. After the time has expired, the test result is taken for verification.

If the work is carried out with a child, then it would be best to vary the testing time depending on how much time the student practices in the Landolt test. To begin with, it will be enough to give the whole test only five minutes of time, and give the command “line” after each minute of working with the rings. After that, the total time spent on the test can increase to ten, and later up to fifteen minutes.

Evaluation of attention distribution

When the main goal of testing is to assess the distribution of a child's attention, children are offered to cross out two types of rings at once. For example, with a slot on the top and right. At the same time, it is necessary to cross out certain types of rings in different ways.

Depending on the result of the child during training and how many times he searched for the type of this or that ring, you can change the task. For example, it was always necessary to find rings with a slot on the top and on the right. Next time you will need to find rings with a slot on the bottom and right. The rest of the testingremains exactly the same as it was in the previous verification method.

This method will help the child better understand the task assigned to him and force him to concentrate more on his attention and actions, depending on the requirements set for him.

Determination of attention span

Attention span is measured on a ten-point scale. The average amount of attention of an adult is estimated by a number from three to seven units. For children, the lower unit, as well as for adults, is three units. The upper limit directly depends on the age of the child. If the child is four or five years old, then the upper limit of the attention span should also be at the level of four or five units, five or six years old - five or six units and in the same spirit.

There is a certain scale for converting attention span units into a ten-point system. If the amount of attention is in the range of six units or more, then the test is assigned ten points. Four and five units correspond to eight and nine points. Two and three units are four and seven points. If the amount of attention is less than two units, then this interval corresponds to the boundaries from zero to three points.

If a child gets about eight to ten points on testing, it means that he is fully ready for school. The norm is considered to be indicators from four to seven for those children who are just entering school. If a child scores between zero and three points, it means that their attention span is not high enough.

Landolt Ring Method and Results Processing

Processing the test results is that you should count the number of rings that were crossed out by the test, as well as the number of mistakes made. It is necessary to calculate the result, both in the total amount for the entire testing time, and for each individual stage until the moment when the “line” command was given. The indicator of stability and productivity of attention can be calculated using a special formula:

S=0, 5N - 2, 8n/60

The letters in this formula have the following meanings:

  • N - the number of rings viewed by the test subject in 1 minute;
  • n is the number of mistakes made during the same time.

That's about it. Now you know everything about what the Landolt Ring technique is, in what situations and on whom this test can be used, how to calculate the test results.
